![]() ![]() Yet, despite its classical pedigree, Dido and Aeneas is thought to have premiered at an unlikely venue: Josias Priest’s Boarding School for Girls in Chelsea, London. Purcell’s work is an English Baroque opera based on Virgil’s telling of the legendary romance between Dido, the queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, a prince from Troy. With Dido and Aeneas, England began to stake a major claim in the opera scene. While opera may have been born in Florence, Italy is far from the only country that influenced its history. By comparison, a modern opera house like the San Francisco Opera’s War Memorial Opera House can seat 3,006 viewers with 200 additional standing room spots!ġ689: Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, the first major English opera, is performed Teatro San Cassiano contained 153 theater boxes spanning five tiers, which could seat approximately 400 people. However, a libretto of 455 verses survived to this day. Most of Peri’s music has been lost, despite his popularity in Europe at the time of the publications. It was very different from what the ancient Greeks would have approved, but it became a new type of entertainment that would have developed throughout the following 400 years. The opera was probably staged privately on the 26th of December 1598 in Palazzo Tornabuoni and represented an attempt to revive the Greek drama, following new standards. Jacopo Peri wrote Dafne for a small group of intellectuals from Florence, who were part of the Camerata de’ Bardi (active between 15), with the support and collaboration of the musician and patron Jacopo Corsi. The characters are: Ovidio, Venus, Cupid, Apollo, Dafne and Nunzio. The story focuses on the love story between the god Apollo and the nymph Dafne. For the first time Peri composed something based on recitative, a melodic speech set to music, as the main part of the opera. Dafne was performed by a small ensemble consisting of a harpsichord, a lute, a viol, an archlute and a triple flute. It was composed by Jacopo Peri in 1598 and the libretto was written by Ottavio Rinuccini. Dafne is the earliest known work that, by modern standards, could be considered an opera. ![]()
